MY DARLING DREADFUL THING (Dark Side of the Word Podcast)

Book cover of MY DARLING DREADFUL THING by Johanna Van Veen

Hello, Tartlets and Darksiders! A new book club podcast episode is up on Dark Side of the Word. Join me and Kait as we discuss the Gothic horror novel My Darling Dreadful Thing by Johanna Van Veen.

Forced to pull strings under the floor for her mama’s séances, Roos discovers that she’s not alone. Another poor girl is there with her. A girl that only Roos can see. A ghost. When Roos’ mama discovers her new talent of connecting with spirits, she forces Roos above the floor to assist in deceiving their clients.

After years have passed, an affluent woman comes to a séance to commune with her dead husband. Seemingly convinced, the woman requests that Roos become her companion, offering mama an amount of money that she can’t refuse. Roos is whisked away to a crumbling estate where an old woman is dying, morbid furniture graces the unused rooms, and attraction to her widowed guardian grows.

Soon, Roos will do anything for her love, even trying to bring back the woman’s dead husband. All doesn’t go to plan, though. Soon someone else is dead, and Roos is left to prove that’s she’s not insane or the murderer.

Kait and I had extremely different opinions about My Darling Dreadful Thing. I loved it – and Kait really, really did not. Watch our newest episode as we duke out our feelings for this book and debate whether or not Roos was haunted or hallucinating.
