Hello, Tartlets and Darksiders! A new book club podcast episode is up on Dark Side of the Word. Join me and Kait as we discuss the The Woods All Black by Lee Mandelo.
Leslie is on a new nursing assignment in Spar Creek, a town nestled in the Appalachian mountains. It seems like a quiet place with simple people, but something sinister lurks in its shadows – something that’s beginning to terrorize its god-fearing citizens. Spar Creek blames Leslie for its presence, claiming he brought his “evil ways” with him. They don’t want his modern medicine. They don’t want to hear about contraception. They don’t like that he wears pants when they think he should be wearing a skirt. They just want him gone.
After serving in WWI as a nurse and finding his sexuality in Paris, Leslie thinks he can handle a lot. That is, until he meets someone like him in Spar Creek. Someone else who feels like a failed woman. Leslie doesn’t want to leave the poor defenseless boy to the superstitions of the townspeople, but staying also means opening himself up to a whole world of trouble – and the truth about its monsters – in this small town.
In this episode, we discuss our love of Appalachian folklore, whether or not this book could be considered horror, and how much we loved the diversity in The Woods All Black.
