Hello, Tartlets and Darksiders! A new book club podcast episode is up on Dark Side of the Word. Join me and Kait as we discuss the psychological thriller novel Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent.
After throwing her father’s corpse into the family trash incinerator, Sally Diamond doesn’t understand why her neighbors are treating her weirdly. But, it’s fine; she’s used to be on her own, and she has memories of her dad to keep her company.
It’s not until Sally starts reading her father’s letters and meeting mysteriously appearing family members that memories of her childhood — her real childhood — come crashing back. As Sally slowly starts integrating herself into society, she realizes why her father always kept her so sheltered — and why she repressed all those childhood memories in the first place.
Some of you may remember when I reviewed Nugent’s Lying in Wait a few years ago. Lying in Wait was a crazy-good novel, so I could not wait to start reading Strange Sally Diamond.
However… Nugent’s newest book failed to live up to my expectations. Kait, on the other hand, had a completely different take. Join us as we discuss building a good character, whether or not the story was original, and the definition of what makes a story “dark.”
