Hello, Tartlets and Darksiders! A new book club podcast episode is up on Dark Side of the Word. Join me and Kait as we discuss the dark historical romance novel Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas.
My biggest gripe with Vampires of El Norte is that it’s barely a horror novel. Although the story is billed as a supernatural thriller, the titular vampires take backseat to the star-crossed romance between separated-then-reunited childhood sweethearts Nena and Nestor. The quality of writing in Vampires of El Norte also disappointed me, considering how much I adored Cañas’s previous book, The Hacienda.
In this podcast episode, Kait and I discuss our expectations for, character dynamics of, and the historical context of Vampires of El Norte. Our conversation also touches on the cultural representation and language used within the narrative, leading to a critical analysis of the writing style and overall execution of the novel. The episode concludes with reflections on future reads and the importance of context in storytelling.
